Your brother left for the UK in 2022 with a certain budget, documents and visa route. Now you want to do the same thing in 2026. His advice? “Just do what I did.” Sounds helpful. It could also be the beginning of an expensive mistake.

The reality is that what worked for your brother in 2022 may not work for you in 2026. Immigration rules change. Universities update requirements. Costs increase. Visa routes change. Even the same country can have a completely different process a few years later. So before you copy someone else's success story, check whether the rules are still the same.

Immigration rules change

One of the biggest mistakes applicants make is treating old immigration advice as permanent.

“Use this document.”

“This is the amount you need.”

“Don't worry about that requirement.”

“That was how I did mine.”

The problem? That advice may have been correct then.

For example, the UK Student visa currently has requirements around having an offer from a licensed student sponsor, meeting financial requirements and proving English-language ability where applicable. (gov.uk)

Someone may tell you, “You can manage with this amount.” But what did that amount cover in 2022?

Tuition is only one part of the cost. You may also need to budget for:

Flights

For professionals, this is even more important. Certain careers may require additional licensing, registration, experience or professional documentation before you can work.

So, what should you do in 2026?

Start with current information

Don't build your entire application around a TikTok video or WhatsApp message from 2022. Check the current requirements from the university, immigration authority and relevant professional regulator.

Build around your own profile

Your brother's academic history, finances, work experience and circumstances are different from yours. A good application starts with your situation, not somebody else's success story.

Check your documents carefully

Your academic records, employment documents, financial evidence, CV and Statement of Purpose should be accurate and consistent. One person's successful application does not mean you should submit the same documents without checking whether they still meet today's requirements.

Don't choose a destination just because everyone is going there

Instead of asking, “Which country is everybody going to?”, ask:

“Which country, programme and route make sense for me in 2026?” That question can save you money, time and plenty of unnecessary stress.
