Global Scholarships Available for September – December: Your Gateway to Studying Abroad
Nigerian students often face financial hurdles when dreaming of studying abroad. Tuition, living expenses, and visa requirements can be steep. Fortunately, a wide range of international scholarships is available to help Nigerians finance master’s and doctoral programs in top universities worldwide. These competitive awards not only pay costs but also strengthen your visa application by proving funds. Scholarships also signal academic merit and leadership qualities, helping you stand out in admissions.
Scholarships take many forms. Fully-funded awards cover tuition, living stipends, insurance and travel (e.g. Chevening, Erasmus Mundus, Vanier). Partial scholarships cover only tuition or a fixed stipend (e.g. GREAT Scholarships, University-specific awards). Some target students from developing countries or Africa specifically. Merit-based awards honor top grades and achievements, while need-based aid considers financial need. Knowing these types helps you apply strategically to the right programs. For example, Commonwealth Scholarships and Nigerian Government-FCDO awards are open to Commonwealth nationals, whereas university scholarships like Bristol’s Think Big are open to all international applicants regardless of nationality
Why Scholarships Matter
Scholarships greatly ease the cost of studying abroad and improve your odds of getting a student visa. Most visa processes require proof of funding, and a scholarship instantly meets that requirement. Beyond money, being a scholarship winner reflects your academic excellence and leadership. Winners join global alumni networks and gain prestige that can boost future scholarships or jobs. In short, a scholarship is not just a ticket in, it’s a way to stand out and show you are a top candidate for study and research abroad
Types of Scholarships Available
Fully-Funded Scholarships: Cover tuition, living allowance, health insurance, and often round-trip travel. Examples include Chevening (UK), Erasmus Mundus (EU), and Vanier CGS (Canada)
Partial Scholarships: Cover a portion of costs (e.g. tuition waiver or stipend). Many universities offer partial awards or tuition reductions for high-achieving internationals.
Country-Specific Scholarships: Target students from particular regions or countries. For instance, Commonwealth Scholarships are for citizens of Commonwealth nations (like Nigeria), and Chinese Government Scholarships (CSC) often have quotas for African countries.
Merit-Based Scholarships: Awarded for outstanding academic, athletic, or artistic achievements. University-specific merit scholarships (e.g. university honors programs, or corporate-sponsored awards) fall here.
Need-Based Scholarships: Aim to help talented students with limited finances. These usually require demonstrating economic need in the application.
United Kingdom Scholarships
The UK is a top destination, and several prestigious scholarships welcome Nigerians:
Chevening Scholarships (UK): The UK Government’s flagship award for future leaders. Fully funded for one-year master’s degrees. Nigerian nationals are eligible and the 2025-26 cycle opened in late 2024, with applications due 7 October 2025. Awards include full tuition, monthly stipends, travel allowances and more
Commonwealth Scholarships (UK): Funded by the UK government for citizens of Commonwealth countries. These full-tuition scholarships (master’s and PhD) target students who can contribute to their home country’s development. Annual deadlines are usually in December. Eligibility includes Nigerians with strong academics who cannot otherwise afford UK study.
University-Specific Awards: Many UK universities offer global scholarships. For example, the University of Bristol’s Think Big Scholarships provide up to £26,000 per year for exceptional international students
(Applications for 2026 entry open Oct 2025.) The University of Edinburgh and others also offer “Global Scholarships” or GREAT Scholarships (partial awards for eligible Nigerians) each year. Always check individual university websites for last-minute openings.
United States Scholarships
The USA offers numerous programs for graduate study:
Fulbright Foreign Student Program (USA): Administered by the U.S. State Department, Fulbright provides $4,000 grants annually for non-U.S. graduate study and research. Nigerian graduates with strong academics and leadership can apply through the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria. Fulbright covers tuition, fees, living stipend, and travel for one- to two-year master’s or PhD studies. It is highly competitive.
Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships (USA): A one-year, non-degree leadership program for mid-career professionals. Humphrey Fellows study in the US and engage in professional development. It “enhances leadership among international professionals” addressing global challenges. Applicants from Nigeria with several years’ experience, especially in public administration or development, can apply via the US Embassy.
University Scholarships (USA): Many U.S. universities offer merit scholarships to international students. For instance, Clark University’s Clark Scholars Program and private university funds (Yale, Stanford etc.) often have prizes for outstanding Nigerians. Check each university’s graduate and undergraduate funding pages. These awards vary widely; some cover half or full tuition. Note deadlines: many U.S. PhD programs have December–January deadlines for Fall 2025 intake. Applying now (summer–fall 2024) can still catch these cycles.
Canadian Scholarships
Canada attracts Nigerian students with its quality education and immigration options. Key scholarships include:
Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (PhD): Valued at C$50,000 per year for three years, this is a top Canadian award for doctoral students. It’s open to Canadian universities’ nominees; strong Nigerian PhD candidates in health, science, social sciences or humanities should seek nomination (usually through their prospective advisor). It’s fully funded. (Note: Vanier was restructured in 2023; the National Scholarships Program now awards similar funding to top doctoral students.)
Lester B. Pearson International Scholarships (Undergraduate): Canada’s most prestigious undergrad scholarship at University of Toronto. Covers tuition, books, incidental fees and residence for four years. It targets exceptional international high school graduates (including Nigerians) with leadership and impact in their community. The 2026 competition deadline is Oct 10, 2025, with about 37 scholars chosen each year.
Other Canadian Awards: Many provincial and university scholarships can benefit Nigerians. For example, the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) and provincial awards in British Columbia and Alberta can top up funding for eligible grad students. Universities like UBC, McGill and Waterloo also have international scholarships or admission awards. Some are automatic with high grades, so maintaining an excellent transcript in Nigerian studies can secure offers.
European Scholarships
Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Scholarships (EU): These are prestigious multi-country master’s programs funded by the EU. Students from all over the world are welcome, with full scholarships available for the best students. They cover tuition, living allowance, travel and insurance. Nigerians can apply directly to individual Erasmus Mundus programs by their deadlines (usually Oct–Jan for studies starting next year).
DAAD Scholarships (Germany): The German Academic Exchange Service offers many scholarships. For Nigerian applicants, the Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS) is key. EPOS funds one- to two-year master’s programs at German universities in development fields (e.g. public health, engineering, management) for graduates from developing countries. Check DAAD Nigeria announcements for application windows.
France Eiffel Excellence Scholarships: The French government’s Eiffel program attracts top foreign master’s and PhD students to France. It focuses on fields like engineering, law, management, and sciences. Applications are submitted by French institutions (through Campus France); interested Nigerian candidates should contact partner universities early (the 2026 call opens Oct 2025). Eiffel covers living costs, travel, and tuition (partial to full).
Netherlands Orange Tulip Scholarship: A Dutch scholarship scheme for talented students from emerging economies (including Nigeria) to study in the Netherlands. Participating Dutch institutions offer tuition waivers or stipends. It’s country-specific – check Neso Nigeria (Dutch embassy) for eligible universities and deadlines.
Scandinavian and Other Scholarships: Several Northern European programs (e.g. Sweden’s Swedish Institute, Finland’s Educations Finland, Finland China Friendship programs) and UK-based GREAT Scholarships (for Nigerians in select subjects) exist. Also, some joint programs like HEC (Pakistan –if applicable) or Erasmus+ traineeships can be considered. Always search each country’s education portal for scholarships open to Nigeria.
Australia and Asia Scholarships
Australia Awards Scholarships (AAS): The Australian Government’s flagship program for Africa. AAS provides full master’s scholarships (tuition, travel, living allowance) to qualified Africans, including Nigerians. It’s open to mid-career professionals; nominees must be citizens of eligible African countries and meet stringent academic and work criteria. The 2025 intake has closed, but keep an eye on announcements for the 2026 intake (usually opens mid-2025).
Australian University Scholarships: Many Australian universities (e.g. University of Melbourne, ANU) offer scholarships to international students. Examples: Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarships (for PhD), and Excellence Awards. Each university’s website lists deadlines and criteria. Nigerians with strong profiles can often apply for admission and scholarship together.
Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships: The Japanese embassy in Nigeria regularly opens MEXT scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Japan. These are fully funded by the Japanese government. For example, the 2026 MEXT call opened in April 2024 with a May 2025 deadline. Programs include research student (for MSc/PhD) and undergraduate tracks. Successful Nigerian applicants pay no tuition and receive stipends.
Korean Government Scholarship (KGSP/GKS): Korea’s Global Scholarship Program funds full Masters and PhD degrees at Korean universities for international students. Eligibility often requires an undergraduate or master’s degree, and a command of English/Korean. Deadlines are typically in Spring. (There is no official Nigeria embassy page, but consult koreaembassy.org or university international offices for details.)
Other Asian Scholarships: Chinese Government Scholarships (CSC) cover bachelors through PhD in China for foreign students (Nigerian students often apply via Chinese embassy channels). Taiwan’s MOE scholarships and Singapore’s ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship may also accept Nigerians. Research grants from JICA (Japan) and the Indian ICCR scholarships sometimes target African students. Always check the relevant embassy’s education section.
